1. Pit and Fissure Sealant Certification Course - 8 CE hours

This one day course meets Texas State Board of Dental Examiners Rule 114.3 which states that a dental assistant wishing to obtain certification must complete a minimum of 8 hours of clinical and didactic education in pit and fissure sealants taken through a CODA accredited dental hygiene program approved by the Board course of instruction.

PLEASE NOTE: PARTICIPANTS MUST PROVIDE THE PATIENT FOR SEALANT PLACEMENT
Minimum of 10 dental assistants, $425 per participant
The laboratory and clinical portions of the course will provide the participant with:
- Microbiology and infection control
- Patient management and medical emergency considerations
- Dental anatomy, sealant products, techniques and placement
- Ethics and jurisprudence related to pit and fissure sealants
- Experience in securing a dry field
- Ergonomic considerations
- Placement of dental sealants with light and chemical cured products on extracted teeth in a laboratory setting
- Placement of at least (6) pit and fissure sealants and topical fluoride on a patient that has been prescreened for sealant placement
Rule 114.3 also states that dental assistants must:
- Have at least two years of dental assisting experience
- Show successful completion of current course in basic life support (CPR Certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross)

2. Coronal Polishing Certification Course - 8 CE hours

This one day course offers 8 hours of clinical and didactic education required by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners for certification in coronal polishing.
The laboratory and clinical portions of the course will provide the participant with:
PLEASE NOTE: IN ORDER TO OBTAIN CORONAL POLISHING CERTIFICATION THE STATE REQUIRES A DENTAL ASSISTANT TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 YEARS OF DENTAL ASSISTING EXPERIENCE AND PROOF OF CPR CERTIFICATION
Minimum of 10 dental assistants, $300 per participant
The laboratory and clinical portions of the course will provide the participant with:
- Oral Anatomy
- Tooth morphology
- Ergonomic considerations
- Indications, contraindications and complications for coronal polishing
- Infection control procedures
- Jurisprudence relating to coronal polishing
- Training in using a slow-speed hand piece
- Principles of coronal polishing
- Armamentarium
- Operator & patient positioning
- Polishing technique, polishing agents, and polishing coronal surfaces of teeth
PLEASE NOTE: IN ORDER TO OBTAIN CORONAL POLISHING CERTIFICATION THE STATE REQUIRES A DENTAL ASSISTANT TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 YEARS OF DENTAL ASSISTING EXPERIENCE AND PROOF OF CPR CERTIFICATION

3. Application of Pit and Fissure Sealants and Coronal Polishing Combined CerTIfication Course for Dental Assistants - 16 CE hours

This two day course meets Texas State Board of Dental Examiners requirements which state that a dental assistant wishing to obtain certification must complete a minimum of 8 hours of clinical and didactic education in pit and fissure sealants and 8 hours of clinical and didactic for Coronal Polishing instruction.

The laboratory and clinical portions of the course will provide the participant with:

- Placement of at least (6) pit and fissure sealants and topical fluoride on a patient that has been prescreened for sealant placement

4. Effective Instrument Sharpening Workshop - 2 CE hours
This course is designed for practitioners who want to learn how to effectively sharpen scaling instruments for use in clinical practice. Despite the many gadgets that have come out over the years to assist with instrument sharpening, most clinicians still rely on their trusty hand stones to accomplish the task. This course focuses on sharpening instruments utilizing hand stones. The course will emphasize maintaining the integrity of instruments during sharpening to increase the longevity of the instrument’s clinical use. A review of infection control and personal protection equipment protocols that should be in place for instrument sharpening will be included. This hands-on workshop will allow participants to engage in presenter-guided instrument sharpening practice.
At the end of this workshop the participant will be able to:

- Determine when instruments require sharpening

- List infection control and personal protective equipment needed for instrument sharpening
- Successfully sharpen scaling instruments while maintaining the integrity of the instrument design characteristics
